If to compute derives from the Latin computare, which means to sum up, to reckon, to calculate, I would say that to decompute means to take all the calculations apart, to find how something came to be reckoned, to backtrack on a conclusion.
I like the backtracking explanation the most, since it reminds me of my happy days doing Logic Programming but all explanations are faithful to the spirit of this blog: instrospection, deconstructing things, always asking why.
